Music Policy – Gainford Church of England Primary School

Intent

At Gainford Church of England Primary School, music is an important part of school life and learning. Through music, children are encouraged to be creative, confident and expressive, while developing teamwork and listening skills. Music also plays a key role in worship and celebrations within our Christian community.

Our Music curriculum aims to:

  • Develop pupils’ musical skills and knowledge progressively from EYFS to Year 6

  • Provide high-quality experiences in singing, listening, composing and performing

  • Foster confidence, enjoyment and creativity

  • Ensure all pupils can access and succeed in Music

This policy follows the National Curriculum for Music (DfE, 2014).

Implementation

Curriculum Structure

Music is taught in line with National Curriculum expectations and includes:

  • Performing

  • Composing

  • Listening and appraising

  • Understanding musical elements

We use Kapow Primary Music to ensure clear progression and consistency across year groups.

Teaching and Learning

  • Music is taught regularly across the school.

  • Lessons are practical and inclusive, allowing all pupils to participate.

  • Teachers model musical skills and introduce appropriate musical vocabulary.

  • Music learning is supported through assemblies, performances and worship.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In EYFS, Music is part of Expressive Arts and Design, where children:

  • Join in with songs and rhymes

  • Explore sounds and instruments

  • Develop rhythm and movement

This supports a smooth transition into Key Stage 1.

Inclusion

At Gainford C of E Primary School, we ensure Music is accessible to all pupils through:

  • Adapted tasks and additional support

  • Visual prompts and clear modelling

  • Inclusive use of instruments and resources

This enables all children to make progress and enjoy music.
